Introducing the Heroku Connector

Guillermo Gutiérrez's profile picture Guillermo Gutiérrez on

We're excited to announce a new feature we've been working on – the Heroku Connector.

At DNSimple we're constantly working to improve, streamline, and simplify your domain management. That's why we've added the ability to connect your domain to your Heroku app, without thinking about DNS or worrying about mistakes. It's the first of many connectors we'll be releasing.

Why is this important?

The Heroku Connector ensures you can perfectly configure your Heroku apps with your domains. While setting up services like Heroku has been streamlined, it still requires some effort. We're here to make it even easier.

This connector is designed to close the gap – it efficiently sets up your connection based on your needs. Try the Heroku Connector for yourself and simplify your domain management, free for 30 days.

How does it work?

The Heroku Connector is an independent web application developed by our team. It sits between DNSimple and Heroku.

There's a new section on your domain's page in the DNSimple dashboard called "Connections". There, you can launch the connector and link your domain to one of your Heroku apps.

First, the connector requests permission to act on your behalf on both sides through OAuth.

Then, you'll select your Heroku app, and decide how to connect it to your domain.

You could:

  • Use a subdomain, as in www.example.com.
  • Use the apex of your domain, as in example.com.
  • Or a combination of both.

Once you're ready, confirm these settings. The connector will show you the actual changes it will make on your behalf on both sides. These usually involve:

  • Creating new DNS records. The connector will choose the best DNS record type for your settings.
  • Removing conflicting DNS records.
  • Creating new domains for your app at Heroku.

You can go back to the settings page and tweak them, or hit the confirm button, which will perform those actions for you and send you back to your domain's "Connections" section at DNSimple.

Your domain is now connected to your Heroku app!

A new card will show up with all the information about your connection. Our Heroku Connector will even monitor it and update the status if something requires your attention.

How did we get here?

We've always worked to make DNS management as easy as possible for everyone. Our first step towards this goal was our one-click services. We noticed many of the services in our one-click services have APIs, which opened the door to automating setups even further.

We've been fans of Heroku for many years, and as customers of both Heroku and DNSimple ourselves, we decided that our first connector should connect our domains with our Heroku applications. It's the first of many upcoming addons to make managing your domains even easier.

The Heroku Connector is built on top of our upcoming Platform API, which creates new opportunities to connect, monitor, and maintain connections with third-party services. If you'd like to work with us on developing something similar for your service, get in touch – we'd love to talk.
