Legacy IP Address Discontinuation

Stephen Nelson's profile picture Stephen Nelson on

At DNSimple, our goal is to bring you robust, modernized infrastructure to enhance the security and efficiency of your DNS management. As part of this evolution, we're officially discontinuing the use of legacy IP addresses on November 20, 2024.

If your domains are using these outdated IP addresses, you should receive an email notification from us soon with additional information on how to prepare. You can also find more details in this support article.

Let's talk more about why we're phasing out these IP addresses, and what you need to do to make sure your DNS records continue responding.

Why we're making this change

The legacy IP addresses that are being discontinued were part of DNSimple's first-generation network infrastructure and were replaced in 2016. Since then, we've been using a more robust and modern setup, enabling faster responses and better security.

This transition is also part of DNSimple's broader effort to improve caching mechanisms at the edge — reducing query times and providing increased protection against DDoS attacks. If you want to learn more about our recent enhancements, check out our blog post on expanded network features and cache edge improvements.

Which IP addresses are affected?

The IP addresses being phased out include:

  • 198.241.10.53
  • 198.241.11.53
  • 50.31.242.53
  • 50.31.243.53
  • 2620:111:8000::53
  • 2620:111:8001::53
  • 2620:111:8002::53
  • 2620:111:8003::53

If you still have DNS records pointing to any of these IP addresses, they will stop responding after the cutoff date. Make sure to update your configurations to align with our current DNSimple name servers and IPs, which can be found in this article.

Who will be impacted?

This change will impact all accounts with domains still using these deprecated IP addresses. If your domains are affected, it's crucial to take action before November 20, 2024. After this date, requests sent to these IP addresses will no longer be processed, so any domains still using them will have DNS resolution issues.

What do you need to do?

To ensure your domains continue resolving, you should examine any DNS records pointing to the deprecated IP addresses, whether they're on DNSimple or a third-party registrar. Update them to use the current DNSimple name servers.
